Video transcript:

Meet Sammie. Sammie is the HR Director of one of the UK’s largest transport companies. Retention is the number one HR issue for the business.

The rate of leavers amongst drivers is increasing and as 20% of the workforce are expected to retire in the next five years, it’s a major business risk.

The job involves long hours, out in all weathers and days spent away from home.

Looking at the exit interview and employee feedback, Sammie and the HR business partners know the primary issue is work-life balance, particularly amongst 40 to 60 year olds.

Overtime and absence levels are increasing, and the operations managers are concerned about staff burn out and safety.

Sammie and her team work with the managers and a cohort of drivers to look at how to address the issue. They need a sustainable solution.

Using working hours and overtime data to inform resource requirements, they trial a change to shift patterns, introducing flexi-shifts for staff with more than five years’ employment giving them more choice around working hours.

With illumin8HR, the team is able to set up and track the impact on overtime, retention and absence, as well as any savings from a reduction in recruitment and training needs.

Twelve months on and there has been a 28% take-up of flexi-shifts. Retention and absence have improved, and managers have received positive feedback from the drivers through the employee surveys.

Sammie and the Ops Director can show the net cost to the business and show the savings achieved.
